Lectors
The Lector proclaims from the ambo the readings that precede the Gospel. In the absence of the Cantor, he or she may also proclaim the Responsorial Psalm after the First Reading. In the absence of the Deacon, the Lector, after the introduction by the Priest, may announce the intentions of the Universal Prayer from the ambo. Also, in the absence of the Deacon, the Lector may carry the Book of the Gospels in the procession to the altar. (from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal)
Responsibilities:
The Lector proclaims from the ambo the readings that precede the Gospel. In the absence of the Cantor, he or she may also proclaim the Responsorial Psalm after the First Reading. In the absence of the Deacon, the Lector, after the introduction by the Priest, may announce the intentions of the Universal Prayer from the ambo. Also, in the absence of the Deacon, the Lector may carry the book of the Gospels in the procession to the altar. To be an effective lector, one must adequately prepare for the readings, including study, prayer, and practice.
Time Commitment:
Scheduled by the Church office except for special times such as Christmas, Easter, etc. Attendance at any training workshops called by the Deacon and serve at assigned Masses, scheduled on a rotation basis, and as requested for special liturgies such as Holy Days, Christmas, and Easter. Lectors may also be invited to participate in the Stations of the Cross during Lent.
Requirements
This ministry is open to Catholics in good standing who are 16 years of age or older and comfortable with public speaking. The introduction to the Lectionary for the Mass says, "A speaking style on the part of the readers that is audible, clear, and intelligent is the first means of transmitting the word of God properly to the assembly."
