prison ministry

Summary

The Prison Ministry of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church lives out Christ’s call in the Gospel:
“I was in prison, and you visited me.”
(Matthew 25:36)

Through prayer, presence, and compassionate outreach, this ministry serves men and women who are incarcerated, reminding them that no one is beyond the reach of God’s mercy. Volunteers bring hope, dignity, and the love of Christ to those often forgotten by society.

Purpose & Responsibilities

The Prison Ministry exists to fulfill the Corporal Works of Mercy by serving the incarcerated with humility, respect, and faithfulness to the teachings of the Catholic Church. We are a team of God loving individuals! And as a team, volunteers are supported, trained and loved through the ministry and for the ministry!

Parishioners may serve in the following ways:

  • Direct Visitation:
Participate in prayer services, Bible studies, and Christian fellowship inside correctional facilities (background check required).
  • Pen Pal Ministry:
Write letters of encouragement and Gospel hope to incarcerated individuals.
  • Prayer Circle:
Commit to praying for those who are incarcerated, their families, victims of crime, and ministry volunteers.
  • Administrative Support:
Assist with organizing materials and supporting outreach efforts.

This ministry operates in alignment with the Diocese of St. Augustine and follows all correctional facility safety protocols. Volunteers always serve in groups.

Volunteer Requirements

Volunteers are not required to have experience—only a heart open to the Lord.

Requirements include:

  • Active participation in St. Matthew’s Catholic Church
  • Willingness to serve with compassion, discretion, and respect
  • Commitment to follow ministry guidelines and facility rules
  • Background check and facility orientation required for in-prison service

Time commitments are flexible. Whether you can offer a few hours a month or more regularly, there is a place for you.
